Six Month Flyby!

The last 6 months, since the baby was born, have absolutely flown by.  The changes she has gone through are so extreme.  She has much more of a personality than three months ago and can accomplish more as well.

Within the past week, Elaina has developed the strength to get up onto her hands and knees.  While she usually faceplants, she is making progress.  Soon she will be crawling along.  We’ll need to start putting more things into lockdown.  Get rid of trinkets, put locks on cupboards, and a gate for the stairs.

It’s so easy to take the changes for granted.  She would need to be held, bounced, fed, sang to, or changed constantly.  She seems to be gradually giving a bit more rest on these issues.  While now there may be a little more time freed from covering basic needs, developing her coordination and social skills is taking more priority.

With that, here is Elaina Maria on piano!

DIY – How to fix a Washing Machine

One of the best ways to build your DIY cred, without attempting a hugely complex project, is to fix something that sounds like a hugely complex project.  Something like replacing a broken car door handle or doing a fix to a large appliance.  Both turn out to be much easier than they sound.

You know those ugly old washing machines that you grew up with?  Aside from being bullet proof, it turns out they are amazingly easy to fix.  The machines are easy to diagnose, and the damaged parts are extremely easy to replace.  Not bad for machines that were manufactured thirty years ago.

In fact, with washing machines there are only about three things that commonly go wrong.  They leak, get stuck in a specific setting, or they stop spinning clothes.  I have taken care of two of the three issues, without any training on the subject. (All though I did read up on the getting stuck on a specific setting issue)

The fixes are as simple as cleaning out a hose, reconnecting a hose, or just replacing a part.

Stuck in a specific setting - This was the problem with the first washer that I fixed.  It would fill the tub up with water and then stop.  No washing, no draining, and no agitation (other than to me!).  It was like the machine just died at that point.  I could manually turn the dial to spin cycle and it would spin and drain the tub.  It was so frustrating!  Finally I  took the top part off the machine (where the control panel is) and saw a small hose dangling.  and another piece that it clearly fit on.  Project complete!  The hose regulates the water level based on the load size.  After a hundred years of working they wiggle off or get clogged.

Solution - Check that water regulation hose first. Reattach or Replace.

Leaking -  A leaking washing machine can be nerve racking.  You tighten pieces, check the rubber washers, and tighten some more.  Still every time you turn on the water it seems to spray everywhere.  I was having problems with the connections on the washer that Ann and I are currently using.  The cold water would spray everywhere when turned on.  It was coming from where the hose connects to the back of the washer.  I used new rubber washers, tightened the hoses, cleaned off the connections, used some plumber’s wrap, and re attached them numerous times.  Still that cold water kept spraying.  Eventually on the third time that I had taken the panel off (pictured) I noticed there was a HUGE CRACK in the valve that regualtes the water.  The machine had been in storage for a year and the small amount of water trapped in there froze and the piece cracked.

After about 10 minutes looking around online I was able to find the part number and get one ordered.  While it did set me back $30 with shipping, it is much better than having to buy a whole new machine for 20 times that.

Solution - Find exact place of leak.  Tighten hoses, replace rubber washers, or replace cracked parts as needed.

Motor Problems -  I haven’t had to deal with motor issues yet, but it is another common washing machine problem is motor issues.  It could be a burnt out motor or a broken drive belt.    You might need to do some investigating and disassembling here.  Be sure to unplug the machine before doing any sort of electrical work.

Solution -Just like the previous two issues, pinpoint the problem area and replace/reallign/reattach the part that needs repair.

While I am certainly nothing close to an expert in this arena, I’m willing to take a look at most any appliance.  Even if I can’t fix it, I can get a better understanding of how it works.  The only appliances that you shouldn’t try fixing is a television or computer monitor.  They have capaciters that can hold their electric charge for many years after the last use.

Washing machines happen to be easy to repair most of the time, but sound quite daunting.  Just make sure that you turn the water off and unplug the machine before starting to work.  Any appliance repair can potentially be dangerous, so use your head.  If you aren’t comfortable with the task and don’t feel you can do it safely contact an expert who can.

Let me know in the comments about other appliances that are easy to fix or ways to build your ‘DIY street cred’

Setting Sail with Homeownership

Ann and I have finally done it!  We have purchased our first piece of real estate property.  The home is a duplex, so we will be able to live in half and use the other half as a rental space.  The sellers were great and helped to pay for residing and re-roofing on the house.  This certainly increased the value on the place much more than the share Ann and I paid for.

We have some renovations planned and are excited to get started.  Of course the weather has just iced over here, so outside projects will have to wait.  Curb appeal is clearly lacking!  There are a number of inside projects as well, so we are anxious to get moved in.  Hopefully we will be able to make some of the interior improvements while there.

Living the Dream, Buying a house!

A huge plus is that we will be able to have our dog living with us.  Right now he is vacationing at Camp Grandma’s.  Ann misses the big puppy quite a bit and will be thrilled to be able to take him back with us after a visit.  I’ll need to do some repair on the fence in the back yard, it currently extends 3/4 of the perimeter.  Plus I plan on destroying the grass in the backyard for garden space.  ( A couple 4′x8′ sections of it at least)

The house closing was the day right after Elaina was born, so it was a very busy week.  Right now we are just waiting for the current renter to finish packing and moving.

Big Trucking in a Big Rig!

A couple of weeks ago I drove across the country to reclaim the possessions and artifacts that Ann and I have accumulated.  The drive was just a little over two days in a rented u-haul truck.  I stopped in Chicago for a night to stay on a friend’s couch.  At 5:00 am I had to get up to move the truck to a different parking spot, and then at 7:00 I had to go put money in a meter.  I should have hit the road at that time, but I was super tired.  The friend had some other friends over and we told stupid jokes for hours into the night.

Luckily it was a smaller U-haul truck so it wasn’t that difficult to drive, but I did have problems with the blind spots.  Plus I felt silly parking in the truck section of all the rest stops.

Can you spot my big rig?

Driving across the country alone sounds stressful when you plan it, but when you actually make the drive it’s a lot easier than you would imagine.  It gives you so much time to think, plan, and reflect.  The big drawback is you forget everything because you can’t easily take notes of your thoughts and epiphanies.

It is so nice to have everything (almost everything, this apartment is small) back in our lives.  Especially our cookware and books. After three months on an air mattress, the bed is wonderful!  Having the ‘moving company‘ be so terrible at their work has kept us from taking everything for granted.  It is so much nicer to have everything available.  Now if only I knew where Ann put everything.

My mom and I stopped by the Bismarck farmer’s market last Sunday (in the K Mart parking lot – so odd). We bought ourselves some zucchini, eggplant, and GIANT carrots. Look at these beasts!!  I put a stick of butter in the shot for comparison. Giant CarrotsSo what do you do when life gives you such a beautiful, raw, nutritious vegetable? Well, I don’t know what you do; but I add sugar, flour, and cream cheese because carrot cake is the best! The recipe I used called for two cups shredded carrot. It only took one carrot to get all I needed. Do you know what that means? I can make five more cakes!!

Shredded carrot

Doesn't it look healthy? Not for long!!

A few minutes of measuring and mixing, an hour of baking, an excruciating hour waiting for it to cool, and the all important frosting later…

The cake!

Notice the Button's pumpkin!

It is sooo good. Come over and eat it! (You’ll have to move quickly, though. I’ve already eaten two big pieces.)

A piece of cake

It's so pretty!

Something is wrong with Todd, though. He doesn’t like carrot cake. I think he must have defective taste buds. Oh, well. More for me:)

Due Date

Due dates have always been “flexible” in my book. Movie rentals, library books, the occasional utility bill…

Unfortunately, I seem to have passed this trait along to my child. Today, October 7th, is her due date, and it doesn’t look like she’s making her grand entrance. That’s all right. She can wait until she’s ready. Only 5% of women actually deliver on their due date anyway.

Corn BreadSo instead of spending the day at the hospital, I’ve spent it in the kitchen. Todd is disappointed the baby isn’t here yet, so I’ve contrived to soften the blow with his favorite meal: Lasagna.

We also had a few ears of corn I didn’t know what to do with so I tried out this recipe for corn bread. Fresh corn!

It turned out great. Much better than dry old cornmeal:)

A Beautiful Year

On August 15th, Todd and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary. It wasn’t a big party – some champagne, frostbitten wedding cake, and a couple of roses.

Todd also gave me a wooden spoon he carved himself. (He’ll tell you all about it in another post).

I can’t believe how much as happened in this last year.  I am so happy to have Todd beside me, and to be building our dreams together. I love you, angel!

Cutie Pie

Yesterday I was unexpectedly  invited to my friend Lauren’s house for dinner.  She called in the early afternoon to see if I’d like to join her and her fiance Tom for barbecued chicken. Since Todd is several states away (more on that later!), I was thrilled at the opportunity to avoid a lonely dinner at home.

Since my mother always taught me never to show up to a party empty-handed, I offered to make dessert. I’ve been meaning to spend a lot more time sharpening my culinary skills, but the stifling summer heat has cast me out of the kitchen. But despite the scorching heat of an oven at 425 in 95 degree weather with no air conditioning, this pie was worth it!

I found the recipe online last fall after Todd and I brought home a bushel of U-Pick apples from Becker Farms. It was a hit with my apple pie loving friends, and it has gotten better each time I’ve made it (if I do say so myself). Unlike most apple pie recipes where you toss the apples in sugar, this calls for a caramel-like syrup to be poured over the lattice crust.

Lauren and Tom loved it. (Tom went back for seconds, which Lauren said is rare for him!) I love sharing good food with good people. Especially because their barbecue chicken was amazing :)
